The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) has been involved in the development of a fibre optic structural health monitoring (SHM) system since 1995.

The system employs Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) and a Fabry Perot filter based interrogation technique, and the Norwegian company Light Structures is the commercial supplier of this system.
