ABP starts second phase of expansion at Port of Immingham

Associated British Ports (ABP) has begun the second phase of expansion for two of its major operations at the Port of Immingham.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has begun the second phase of expansion for two of its major operations at the Port of Immingham.

Under the expansion, ABP is expected to invest £36m in the container terminal at Immingham, and a further £2.8m to expand the existing land and services to support customer operations within the port.

Following the completion, the expansion is estimated to support around 50% of additional growth in terms of volumes at the port by 2020.

The expansion is part of a £50m investment announced by ABP last year for its container terminals situated at the Ports of Hull and Immingham.

In the first phase, ABP invested around £14m to expand the Hull Container Terminal and installed two purpose-built gantry cranes at the terminal.

ABP Humber regional director Simon Bird said: “Trade through the Humber Ports remains buoyant and we are confident that this trend will continue as we invest in our infrastructure.

“The Humber Ports play a vital role as a gateway for trade across the North of England, the Midlands, and beyond.”

“The Humber Ports play a vital role as a gateway for trade across the North of England, the Midlands, and beyond, and we are committed to seizing the opportunities that lay ahead of us.

“The Port of Immingham is already the biggest port in the country by tonnage, but signs are indicating that we have the potential to grow significantly in the coming years.”

In 2013, the Port of Immingham dealt with 68,000 container units, which increased to 183,000 units last year.

A part of this growth is driven by the rise in the number of Regional Distribution Centres across the M1 / M62 corridor that aims to cater to the Humber Ports.
