Abu Dhabi-based port regulator AD Ports Group has announced a collaboration with Kazakh national shipping company KazMorTransFlot to acquire two oil tankers for the transportation of Kazakhstan’s oil.

KazMorTransFlot (KMTF), a subsidiary of KazMunayGas (KMG), Kazakhstan’s national oil corporation, will employ the new vessels to carry Kazakhstan’s oil across the Caspian Sea.

The vessels named Liwa and Taraz, after ancient cities in the UAE and Kazakhstan, were valued at $35m and have been developed to meet specific oil company requirements. This includes inert gas systems which implement the vessel’s safety.

The vessels will function as shuttle tankers along the Caspian Sea route, making continuous trips to transfer Kazakhstan’s oil to Azerbaijan.

According to AD Ports Group, this agreement will support its expansion into a “crucial” maritime corridor, enabling it to efficiently move goods across a larger network.

Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of AD Ports Group, explained the group’s outlook.

Al Shaiba said: “As we expand our footprint into shipping and global networks, we are not only ensuring the safe and efficient transport of Kazakhstan’s oil but also setting a precedent to guide safety and security advances in the maritime industry.

“This move symbolises our unwavering commitment to excellence, safety, and sustainable practices as we navigate towards a brighter future for global shipping and trade.”

AD Ports Group stated how this service contributes to the diversification of oil transportation routes for further distribution to the rest of the globe via the Mediterranean or the Black Sea, hence increasing Kazakhstan’s global trade footprint.

Aidar Orzhanov, General Director of KMTF added: “We are implementing this project together with our strategic partner AD Ports Group in accordance with the task of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.K.Tokayev, to create alternative routes for transportation of Kazakhstani oil.

“This will allow us to efficiently, and safely transport Kazakhstani oil in Caspian Sea for further shipment to international markets. We believe that this is only the first step of our long-term cooperation with AD Ports Group.”
