The platform is set to tackle critical issues associated with electric ferry operations, including battery range limitations and variable energy costs.

The AI system will facilitate daily operations by customising charging strategies, managing energy consumption, and improving passenger communication through digital displays and mobile applications.

Hadag serves approximately ten million passengers annually via a year-round service. This initiative is said to represent a significant advancement towards improved operational efficiency and a better overall experience for customers.

The move is also claimed to position Hamburg as a leader in maritime environmental innovation, aligning with the city’s ambitions to substantially lower transport-related emissions.

By employing optimisation algorithms and cloud-based planning tools, Hamburg is enhancing its status in sustainable water-based public transport.

As part of the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance, the city has committed to reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 and by 95% by 2050, with its electric ferries playing a crucial role in achieving these objectives.

With three electric ferries already operational in 2024 and additional vessels on the horizon, Hadag is progressing towards a fully zero-emission fleet.

In 2022, Danfoss Power Solutions’ Editron division was chosen to provide drivetrain systems for three hybrid ferries being built by German shipyard SET for Hadag.
