Finnish firm Konecranes has struck a licensing agreement with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for making and distributing the former’s port cranes in India.

The alliance between Konecranes and L&T’s Minerals & Metals business arm will include manually run ship-to-shore cranes, rail-mounted gantry cranes and rubber-tired gantry cranes from the Konecranes portfolio, as well as the company’s shipyard cranes.

Konecranes and Indian conglomerate L&T will also cooperate to provide after-sales support.

The partnership will strengthen Konecranes’ reach in India, which Konecranes South Asia sales director for Port Solutions Shyam Pathak described as ‘a dynamic market with great potential’.

He continued: “We look forward to working with L&T to build a customer base that will benefit from our specialist expertise and global service network.”

Cochin Shipyard has placed the first order under the agreement for two shipyard jib cranes, which are level-luffing, single-boom jib cranes.

The cranes will be made at L&T’s Kanchipuram factory in Tamil Nadu and are slated for delivery within 24 months.

The first crane has a 75t lifting capacity with 85m outreach, and the second has a 40t lifting capacity with 75m outreach.

Konecranes will supervise the delivery process of the cranes, whose manufacturing will use design and components from the firm.

The agreement aligns with the Indian Government’s Make in India strategy.

Last October, Konecranes secured an order to supply a complete automated container handling solution to DP World-operated London Gateway Terminal.

In the same month, the Finnish firm was also contracted to deliver 26 hybrid rubber tire gantry cranes (RTGs) to Port Houston, Texas, US.
