Cargotec’s MacGregor has developed a new cargo system for one of the world’s largest container ships MSC Gülsün.

Built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea, the ship was delivered in July. With a capacity of over 23,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), the 400m-long and 61.5m-wide vessel is the first of 11 ultra-large containerships.

SHI has signed a contract to build six of the vessels and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering will construct the remaining five vessels for MSC.

The two companies have worked closely since the initial stage of the cargo system project to help meet MSC’s operational requirements.

MacGregor Cargo Handling senior naval architect Atte Virta said: “This is an industry-leading cargo system and the design of the system is very innovative.”

The design increases the vessel’s cargo quantity. Together with a 24-container wide ship design, the capacity reaches 23,756TEU.
