MacGregor to deliver container lashing systems for Hapag-Lloyd’s vessels

The vessels will be constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea.

MacGregor, a part of Cargotec, has been selected by German shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd for the supply of container lashing systems for 12 container vessels with a capacity of more than 23,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) each.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) will construct the vessels in South Korea.

Hapag-Lloyd is expected to receive the new vessels starting from the second quarter of next year and ending in the fourth quarter of 2024.

MacGregor has worked with Hapag-Lloyd, from the early stages of the project, on the concept design and cargo system configuration for the vessels.

Hapag-Lloyd Strategic Asset Projects senior director Lutz-Michael Dyck said: “Cargo system plays a very important role in the efficient operation of the container ship.

“Hapag-Lloyd and MacGregor have worked together closely and developed the optimum cargo system for this vessel series to ensure the best cargo efficiency. Placing this order with MacGregor was the first choice for us.”

Last month, Hapag-Lloyd started a comprehensive fleet upgrade programme, which will cover more than 150 ships over the next five years.

The programme began with the loading of the first retrofit propeller in the Port of Hamburg, Germany.

With 253 container ships, which have a total capacity of 1.8 million TEU, Hapag-Lloyd is claimed to be the world’s fifth largest container carrier.

Employing around 11,500 people across the globe, MacGregor provides maritime cargo and load-handling products, services and solutions for shipbuilders, shipowners and operators.

In March, MacGregor won contracts worth more than $15m for the supply of comprehensive packages of Ro-Ro equipment for four Höegh Autoliners Aurora-class pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs).
