French shipping company CMA CGM Group has opened a new navigation and port operations centre in Singapore in an effort to offer safety to its seafarers, fleet and customers’ cargo.
Located at American President Lines (APL), a unit of CMA CGM headquartered in Singapore, the new site will also help the company to optimise vessel routes.
The newly opened facility is CMA CGM’s third navigation command centre and will support the group’s fleet of more than 500 container vessels.
Featuring new navigation assistance tools and technologies, the centre will further provide round the clock services to help track and examine a wide-range of nautical, meteorological and geographic information in real-time.
CMA CGM noted that the new centre would mainly serve the Asian time zone, while its two other facilities in France and the US are currently serving the European and Americas time zones respectively.
Using live analytics of the vessels’ operating speeds, ocean currents, weather forecasts and high traffic areas, all the three centres have the ability to assess, anticipate and mitigate any navigation-related risks to the operations.
The centres send the analysis results to deck officers on board various vessels, operating at seas.
In July last year, CMA CGM, along with PSA Singapore Terminals (PSA), started operations at its first two of four container berths at Pasir Panjang Terminal in Singapore.
