Upon completion, the expanded port will be able to handle three million containers a year, an increase on the current 800,000t, and one million containers by mid 2012.

Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority is also planning to launch a tender for the works in early 2012.

Djibouti serves as a port for its landlocked neighbour Ethiopia, which accounts for about 70% of traffic, according to Reuters.
