Globecomm Systems has been selected as subcontractor for the maritime GSM / VSAT-managed operations for Ericsson’s real-time container ship monitoring system.

The seven-year deal will allow Ericsson to establish a mobile communication network that will provide up to 400 container vessels worldwide with automated monitoring and real-time information control.

Under the contract, Globecomm will provide below-deck equipment and supply Ericsson’s Danish subsidiary Ericsson Denmark with operation services.

Globecomm senior VP and GM Andy Silberstein said the company’s collaboration with Ericsson enables it to use its global maritime VSAT network together with its hosted wireless GSM services, thus bringing together two core Globecomm capabilities to provide a total solution for its customers. The network is expected to be completed within the next two years.

As a part of Ericsson’s rollout, Globecomm will provide its se@FLEX VSAT service, which includes integration of shipboard terminals accessing Ku-band satellites and also the use of its hosted wireless services. The se@FLEX service will access over 20 satellite beams, providing data access from wherever Ericsson’s vessels are, and backing them up in its New York data centre.

The hosted wireless service will provide hosted BSC services, BTS / BSC monitoring and performance management by using Ericsson equipment.

Globecomm president and COO Keith Hall said this contract is a great example of how far the company has come as a global managed network services provider. “We take great pride in becoming a major player in the next-generation maritime market and this contract is a major stepping stone. We also look forward to the opportunities that will arise from this contract and our partnership with Ericsson,” Hall said.

Globecomm Maritime solution provides Ku-band maritime service coverage that reaches global shipping lanes and a worldwide managed network of fibre-linked teleports for transmission and management of customer traffic. It also offers VSAT and L-Band communications services, value-added communications software, shipboard systems and systems integration expertise worldwide.
