Rolls-Royce will design and provide integrated power and propulsion systems based on its Environship concept for two new cargo vessels.

The vessels, which have been purchased by Norwegian transportation company Nor Lines, will be built at Tsuji Heavy Industries shipyard in Jiangsu, China.

The vessels will enter service from October 2013, operating along the west coast of Norway.

The company said that the Environship concept vessels incorporate a striking wave piercing bow, gas-powered engines and propulsion system, improve the overall performance of the vessel and increase fuel efficiency by up to 18%.

The vessels also virtually eliminate SOx and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 40% compared with similar conventional ships.

The order includes options to build an additional two vessels of the same design.
