Vigor Industrial subsidiary Vigor Fab has been selected to construct a new fireboat for the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) in order to provide better protection for people.

The new boat will be designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, with construction slated to commence in Seattle this autumn.

The vessel will be capable of cruising at a maximum speed of 11.5k in full-load condition and will be equipped with Cummins QSK19-M engines.

The fireboat engines, which are Environmental Protection Agency Tier III certified, have a maximum horsepower of 750bhp at 1800rpm.

"We look forward to working with Vigor…and also to the day the new boat will be on the water protecting the people of San Francisco."

The vessel’s firefighting system is capable of accommodating up to three crew members and four firefighters. It consists of six Stang fire monitors, which will be supplied with water and foam from three 6,000gpm fire pumps.

US Homeland Security Division SFFD assistant deputy chief Kyle Merkins said: "We look forward to working with Vigor on this project and also to the day the new boat will be on the water protecting the people of San Francisco."

Vigor Fab sales director Bryan Nichols said: "We’ve been aggressively ramping-up our ability to fabricate complex vessels. This project is an excellent opportunity to put that preparation into action for our customer."

The delivery of the fireboat is scheduled to take place by autumn 2015.
