The Port of Tyne has announced the acquisition of the UK’s first fully electric foiling pilot boat, marking an advancement in the sustainability efforts of the port and the British maritime sector.
This state-of-the-art vessel, designed by Artemis Technologies, is expected to be operational before the end of the year.
It will contribute to safer and more efficient pilot transfers for ships delivering essential goods to the North East of England.
Port of Tyne CEO Matt Beeton said: “Adding the EF-12 Pilot to the Port’s fleet is a significant milestone not just for the Port of Tyne, but for the maritime sector as a whole.
“As the first UK port to adopt this groundbreaking technology, we’re not only improving standards of safety and efficiency but also delivering a more sustainable operation in support of the Government’s Maritime 2050 strategy.”
The vessel’s advanced design, featuring Artemis’ patented eFoiler technology, ensures zero operational emissions.
The investment in the Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat aligns with the Port of Tyne’s commitment to reducing emissions and moving towards a fully net-zero pilotage service.
Artemis Technologies CEO Dr Iain Percy OBE said: “We are delighted to partner with the Port of Tyne, which will see the UK’s first deployment of a fully electric foiling pilot boat.
“This collaboration showcases the potential of maritime innovation and technology to meet the demands of a cleaner maritime future.”
Recently, Red Funnel and Artemis Technologies moved into the construction and delivery phase of their new electric ferry for Isle of Wight services.
The Artemis EF-24 Passenger ferry, an electric foiling vessel, is expected to revolutionise sustainable ferry travel with zero emissions.
