Grimaldi Group’s Spain-based Trasmed GLE SL has chosen Wartsila Exhaust Treatment for the deployment of open-loop exhaust gas abatement technology on board two roll-on/roll-off passenger ferries.

Four Wartsila I-SOx open-loop scrubbers with exhaust de-plume systems have been chosen by Trasmed for two of its RoPax vessels, namely Volcan del Teide and Ciudad de Granada.

These vessels provide services in the Mediterranean Sea.

Each ferry will be equipped with four scrubbers, one on each main engine.

By scrubbing 3.5% heavy fuel oil down to the 0.5% limit, Wartsila’s scrubbers are said to be ‘flexible’, providing MARPOL Annex VI sulphur cap compliance.

The scrubbers will also allow the ferries to sail at a lower 0.1% sulphur limit in order to fulfil the emission control area (ECA) and worldwide regulations.

The deployment, which will be the first time Wartsila carries out a RoPax scrubber retrofit in the region, will occur next year.

Wartsila Exhaust Treatment director Sigurd Jenssen said: “We are delighted to see Trasmed GLE SL joining the ranks of maritime leaders committed to meeting environmental regulations and reducing shipping’s impact on the planet.

“Not only does this announcement build on our long relationship with Grimaldi and the group’s subsidiary companies, but it also confirms the wider trend we are seeing across the shipping industry, that shipowners are investing in quality, flexible and lifecycle-based technologies for their vessels, either at the newbuild stage or as retrofits.”

Trasmed managing director Ettore Morace added: “All the Trasmed fleet will have the scrubbers installed before next summer 2022. This will be a huge effort from our technical department and confirms our full commitment to be an ‘environmentally friendly’ shipping company.”

Wartsila Exhaust Treatment provides integrated compliant systems for all kinds of vessels, with open-loop, closed-loop or hybrid configurations.

Recently, Greek shipowner Gaslog selected the Wartsila Optimised Maintenance Agreement for ten very large liquefied natural gas carrier ships.
