Aboa Mare provides Basic and Advanced Polar Code training in Turku, Finland. These courses comply with the STCW Code A-V/4 and IMO Model Courses 7.11 and 7.12, and have received approval from Traficom, the Finnish Maritime Authorities.

The Polar Code courses are intended for masters, chief officers, and navigating officers who are required to complete Polar Code training, as well as ship owner personnel working with vessels operating in polar areas and authorities seeking a deep understanding of the demands placed on personnel, ships, and their equipment by polar operations.

Upon completing the Polar Code Basic training, the participant will:

  • Understand the demands set by extremely cold conditions and darkness for personal safety and vessel equipment
  • Understand the demands set by sea ice to a navigating officer
  • Understand the effects of ice accumulation on vessel surfaces
  • Be prepared to safely operate vessel equipment in extreme conditions
  • Be prepared for emergencies in polar areas

Upon completing the Polar Code Advanced training, the participant will:

  • Understand demands set by extremely cold conditions and darkness for safe working and operating vessel equipment
  • Be able to navigate in sea ice in polar areas
  • Be able to counteract the effects of ice accumulation on vessel surfaces
  • Be prepared for to plan, prepare, lead and manage emergencies in polar areas

As an alternative for the Polar Code Basic on-site training, you can register for the Polar Code Basic online course. The 24-hour web-based course is delivered 100% online- no physical attendance is required, and you can learn at your own pace. The online course covers the same requirements as the on-site course.

Each participant that has completed the course successfully will be issued a certificate.
