Managing Ballast Water Poses Challenges

The Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) will eventually introduce a new operational burden on ships' crews with the introduction of ballast water management systems (BWMS).

Most BWMSs are designed so that they clean the water when the ship is ballasting and de-ballasting, with the de-ballasting step being either to neutralise biocides or another dose of treatment.

This article addresses some of the problems that arise with BWMSs, since International Maritime Organization (IMO) members remain silent on these essential aspects of the implementation of the BWMC, without which the regulations will have limited, if any, effect in protecting the oceans.
