ScanMarine has signed a turnkey contract for interior outfitting of public areas with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea. The contract includes two RoPax ferries for Gothenburg-based operator Stena RoRo. ScanMarine’s scope of work includes all interior works, electrical works and piping in public toilets, from detailed design, to material delivery and installation on site in South Korea. The total area of public areas is circa 730m² per ferry.
ScanMarine’s managing director, Mr Krister Andersson, says: “We are honored to cooperate with SHI, which is one of the world’s largest shipyards. We have been active in Korean shipbuilding industry for about 20 years, but this is the first time we sign a turnkey contract directly with a Korean shipyard. This contract will hopefully be a good start for even larger assignments in the Korean shipbuilding industry, which has a large potential within the passenger and cruise vessel segment.”
The final contract issues was clarified at the end of 2008 and today ScanMarine is in an intensive design and planning phase. The design is to be finalized in August of 2009 and the first installation phase, on the first ship, will be at the end of 2009. The ships are to be delivered to the ship-owner in 2010-2011.
The two new constructions are sister ships to Stena Trader and Stena Traveler, which were built at Fosen Yards in Norway 2006-2007. The ships’ interiors are designed by Danish architect Steen Friis Design. The existing ships, which take 300 passengers, are today operating on the Hook of Holland-Killingholme route and the new ferries will reinforce the Stena RoRo fleet in the North Sea and Irish Sea.
