Tanker Damage Stability Regulations

By QinetiQ International Maritime Consultancy & Software

At MEPC66 in April 2014, the IMO agreed amendments to MARPOL Annex I Ch.4 and the IBC / BCH Code concerning the need for tankers to demonstrate compliance with damage stability regulations. In May 2014, similar requirements were agreed for gas tankers and the IGC / GC Code at MSC93.

This paper provides an insight into the requirements and likely problems in achieving compliance for tanker owners, operators and mariners.

It describes the background to the amendments, their implications, and options for complying with them.

It also highlights historical issues, which may have significant influence on whether a ship can comply based on the existing documentation and systems aboard.
