With a new global push for environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL's) end users are being bombarded with options and lubricant manufacturer's pitching different base oil technologies and theories.
Or even worse, lubricant manufacturer's pitching their lubricants but not being clear about their base oil technology. This is critical because performance plays a large part in factoring base oils. With this paper I will do my best to provide an overview of the base oils and decipher the different names used to describe these fluids.
The take away from this is that not all EAL's are created equal. Technologies and performance will vary; cost associated with these differences will also be discussed.
