Hamburg, Germany – Backed by more than 80 years of engineering excellence, Caterpillar marine generator sets are built to offer dependable and efficient service even under extreme conditions. The new Cat® C6.6 ACERT® generator set combines proven design and manufacturing expertise with the latest ACERT technology to provide state-of-the-art performance, fuel economy, emissions compliance and electronic control. With six different ratings from 100kWe to 170kWe, at 1,500rpm (50Hz) or 1,800rpm (60Hz), the C6.6 fills the gap between the existing Cat C4.4 and Cat C9 generator sets.

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems offers the broadest spectrum of marine generator sets in the industry, ranging from 10kWe to 7,680kWe. They are packaged ready-to-run at Caterpillar facilities and can be factory-approved by all major marine classification societies (MCS), thus eliminating the need for re-packaging and classifying at the dealer or shipyard. In addition, Cat generator sets can be equipped with an innovative electronic modular control panel (EMCP), which combines advanced monitoring capabilities and critical safety features into one user-friendly system.

Reliable, durable, quiet and compact

The Cat C6.6 ACERT is the latest in a new range of compact generator sets designed to offer ease of installation and long service intervals. This product family, which also includes the Cat C1.5, C2.2 and C4.4 generator sets, provides customers with a more comprehensive power offering for smaller boats and means they need only deal with one supplier for both propulsion
and auxiliary power. The C6.6 is IMO-compliant; its 60Hz ratings meet EPA Tier 2 and its 50Hz ratings meet EU 97/68EC Stage II and CCNR Stage II emission regulations.

With its robust set-up, the Cat C6.6 ACERT is aimed mainly at commercial marine users. A heavy-duty air cleaner and glow plugs to aid starting in cold weather support operation in harsh environments. Three different cooling options (radiator cooling, keel cooling and
seawater after-cooling) provide maximum flexibility. MCS-certified and ready-to-install C6.6 packages with complete documentation are available straight from the factory. These packages incorporate all type-approved alarms and shutdowns and meet the requirements for manned and
unmanned engine room applications, including emergency applications.

Other advanced features like the common-rail fuel system, electronic engine control, leak-free engine operation and extended service intervals will also benefit pleasure craft users. The same applies for the excellent power quality the C6.6 is providing through its electronic governor, safeguarding the operation of computers and other sophisticated electronic equipment. Commercial and pleasure craft users also benefit from high block load acceptance up to 100%, which helps to start heavy auxiliary loads or large air conditioning units. Last but not least, the C6.6 has low heat rejection, which makes life easier for both naval architects and the engine room crew.

A strong heart

The Cat C6.6 ACERT generator set uses an in-line, four-stroke, 6.6L diesel engine, which is electronically governed, turbo-charged and after-cooled. Its redesigned engine block reduces noise and vibration while a four-valve cylinder head improves efficiency. The engine drives a
brushless three-phase generator, separately excited from auxiliary winding (AREP) and capable of producing 300% short circuit current for up to 10s if needed. Engine and generator are resiliently mounted on a common base frame.

The C6.6 utilises a modern common-rail fuel system with a closely optimised air-management system, both overseen by the latest generation of ACERT engine control. In the fuel system, variable multi-shot injection combines with a high compression ratio for optimised fuel efficiency and very low smoke operation. Other improvements involve the combustion system and the manifold as well as the high-efficiency turbocharger.

The Cat C6.6 ACERT is designed for fail-safe operation in unmanned engine rooms. The sea water and jacket water pumps are gear-driven and there are safety shutdowns for low oil pressure, high water temperature and overspeed. Utilising a closed crankcase ventilation system,
evaporation of crankcase fumes is prevented.

Produced in a world-class facility

Cat C6.6 ACERT marine generator sets, like the smaller C-series marine generator sets, are exclusively produced at the Wimborne Marine Power Centre in the UK. Based in the county of Dorset, some 200km south-west of London, the former Sabre Engines was re-named Caterpillar Marine Power UK in April 2008. This facility is ISO 9002-certified and uses the Caterpillar Production System (CPS) to achieve best-in-class quality, speed and safety. About 100 experienced employees are engaged in manufacturing and testing, providing customers across the globe with expanded production capacity and reduced delivery times.

On 16 June 2008, the first C6.6 left the Wimborne Marine Power Centre for customer Productie Zee Zand. After easy installation and commissioning, the generator set immediately started logging hours on the dredger ‘Deo Gloria’ which is operating in the Westerschelde delta, off the Belgium coast. Running seven days a week and about 20 hours a day since, the Cat C6.6 ACERT generator set has provided the customer with smooth and reliable service.

A wealth of services

Providing great engine technology is one thing. Caterpillar, however, also offers owners and operators a comprehensive range of related services which, for example, allow financing and extended warranties to be combined into a single lifetime customer care solution. Cat Financial
provides world-wide construction, term and repower financing for ships with Cat marine engines or generator sets. Cat Insurance offers extended service coverage (ESC) for both new and used engines.

In addition, every Cat marine engine and generator set sold is backed by an unrivalled global sales and service network. More than 2,100 dealer locations across the world offer product support and spare parts when needed. More importantly, 120,000 dealer employees are pledged to provide maximum customer care. Together with 100,000 Caterpillar employees whose job is to provide product and manufacturing excellence, they make up the unique Team Caterpillar.

The power you live by

The Cat C6.6 ACERT generator set provides efficient and reliable electrical power while remaining compact in size. With six ratings covering 100kWe-170kWe, it adequately serves the needs of related 50Hz and 60Hz markets across the globe. In addition, the C6.6 combines low operating cost with high fuel tolerance including diesel, kerosene, jet aviation and bio fuels. Needless to say for an engine with ACERT technology, the generator set operates virtually
smoke-free under steady state operation as well as during load pick up. When improved fuel economy and emissions compliance, as well as the monitoring and safety capabilities of the EMCP, are taken into account, it’s easy to see why the new Cat C6.6 ACERT generator set is destined to become the preferred source of auxiliary power for smaller commercial vessels as well as larger motor yachts.
